An Alarming Statistic... Confirmed

Thursday January 1, 2009

Melissa Mayer, coordinator of public information from the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), confirmed the statistic mentioned in my December 21, 2008 post “An Alarming Statistic?” is in fact, quite alarming. Nine percent of Canadians age 15 and over are toothless.

The number one cause of tooth loss according to numerous studies is gum disease, known clinically as periodontal disease. Proper brushing and flossing habits and frequent visits to your dentist are easy ways to prevent this devastating disease. If gum disease is detected early, it is often treatable with frequent deep cleanings from your dental hygienist and oral medicated rinses. Advanced Periodontitis is irreversible, but a recent study conducted by the University of Michigan, suggests that gene therapy, a technique that transfers genes into cells to treat a disease, shows promising results for conquering gum disease. With recent studies linking gingivitis and advanced periodontal disease to other health conditions such as heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic kidney disease, this possible treatment option will be a welcomed addition in the fight for optimum oral health.
