Dentists Often the First to Spot Eating Disorders

Thursday February 19, 2009
February 22 to 28 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. What does this have to do with your teeth and oral health? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, dentists are often the first to spot eating disorders in patients. Key signs of a potential eating disorder include Bad breath, sensitive teeth, enamel that is worn and appears translucent, mouth sores, dry mouth, cracked lips, bleeding gums, along with a tender mouth, throat, and salivary glands. The National Eating Disorders Association estimate that "Nearly 10 million females and 1 million males in the U.S. are battling eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, while millions more suffer from binge eating disorder."

Dr. Katina Morelli, D.D.S., dental director for Delta Dental of Illinois warns us that "A parent may not recognize a child is anorexic or bulimic, however, through a routine dental check-up, a dentist may spot the oral signs of the disease," adding "Eating disorders have serious implications for oral health and overall health so when dentists see the symptoms of eating disorders we encourage our patients to seek help." Based in Lisle, Ill., Dr. Morelli tells us Delta Dental "supports providing appropriate referrals to counselors or clinics for people with signs and symptoms of eating disorders. We encourage those with eating disorders, or those who are caring for individuals with eating disorders to seek care from a dental professional to restore a healthy mouth."

For more information please visit the National Eating Disorders Association's website or call their toll-free helpline at 800-931-2237.
