A Time to Recognizing Dental Assistants

March 2009 is Women's History Month; a time for us to honor the great women in our past that set the foundation for women's rights and, at the same time, support modern day role models for future generations of strong women. March is also an important time for dental assistants in North America. Since 1978, the first full week in March has been devoted to this valuable group of dental professionals as "Dental Assistants Recognition Week". The dental community takes this time to recognize the commitment dental assistants make to their profession, employers, and patients. In honor of both events I was inspired to research the history dental assisting. Who was the first dental assistant? How did women contribute to dentistry in the early years of the profession?

My search for the first dental assistant also led me to the woman that founded the American Dental Assistants Association; the "the oldest, largest group representing professional dental assistants."

I hope all dental assistants enjoy this week and ultimately realize that they are a truly valued group of individuals.

Do you know a dental assistant that goes above and beyond her call of duty? Are you a dental assistant and would like to share your own personal experiences in the dental office? Join the conversation in the dentistry forum and share your stories!
