Stomach Ulcer Bacteria Linked to Bad Breath

Friday May 1, 2009

We all experience bad breath, I'll be the first one to admit it. Depending on the cause of your bad breath, treatments used to extinguish the odor from the mouth are usually very effective. When bad breath becomes a persistent problem that appears for no apparent reason, a trip to see your dentist might be in order.

Certain medical conditions, from diabetes to chronic kidney failure, have been known to cause bad breath.
Japanese researchers have found the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, a possible cause of peptic ulcers and/or gastric cancers, living in the mouths of people with bad breath and no signs of a stomach illness. The researchers have identified the mouth as a possible reservoir for H. pylori. The abstract from the study seems to suggest that H. pylori infection in the mouth may be indirectly related to bad breath caused by periodontitis, an advanced stage of periodontal disease.

Remember that your oral health is just as important as your general health and wellness. If you have a condition such as chronic bad breath, book an appointment to see your dentist for further diagnosis.
