What a Relief - Jaw Pain Ends 65 Years Later
65 years of jaw pain ended May 4, 2009 for 87 year old Alfred Mann. After serving with the Royal Medical Corps in Italy, back in 1944 during WWII, this former Army nurse was undoubtedly shocked when he awoke to find a half inch piece of shrapnel on his blood soaked pillow. Apparently hearing loss and injuries to his face, shoulder and leg were not the only outcome after a land mine exploded in Monte Cassino, Italy. A piece of shrapnel became lodged in his jaw, causing years of pain and bleeding. Now that he is apparently pain free, Alfred was quoted as saying "I could only eat soft food and now I'm eating everything and enjoying it."
I'm curious to know if Mr. Mann ever had a panorex taken? His doctor referred him to see a dentist, and was told his pain was from an ulcer. Jaw pain may become a debilitating condition, especially if left untreated. It is unfortunate that Alfred Mann suffered for so long from the pain caused by the shrapnel. It is quite possible that surgery to remove the shrapnel was not possible. I assume, regardless of how it was ultimately removed, he is basking in the joy of being pain free, and enjoying the foods he was unable to savour for so many years.
