Fluoride: Yes or No?
Most dental experts advocate the use of fluoride; a naturally occurring element that has been shown to prevent tooth decay. In an attempt to provide the benefits of fluoride to the general public, fluoride is added to the public drinking water system, in areas where fluoride does not occur naturally.
Most people accept water fluoridation as a benefit to their dental health, but did you know that there are people against the addition of fluoride to their water?
What are your thoughts? Do you think fluoride should be added to public drinking water? Be the first to respond with your opinion.

Please tell us where, exactly, you have found supporting evidence (in writing) for your statement that fluoride is “a naturally occurring element that has been shown to prevent tooth decay.” Obviously, there have been no studies showing it prevents tooth decay in places like Kentucky, which has been about 100% fluoridated for a long time and now has one of the worst dental health records in the US…
The fluoride added to drinking water is not “naturally occurring.” I vote a great big NO.
Those promoting fluoridation simply refuse to read the current research showing it is ineffective and dangerous to health. Go to (www.fluoridealert.org) .and read several articles.
Read the letter from Dr. Hardy Limeback ( DDS, PhD Biochemistry) — Head, Preventive Dentistry, University of Toronto entitled “Why I am now officially opposed to adding fluoride to drinking water”
He was the principal research advisor to the Canadian Dental Asociation for over 10 years in promoting fluoridation. His letter is an apology to other dentists and the public.
Over 140 Research studies listed, including:
Increased risk of bone cancer — 13 studies
Lead, arsenic, radium contaminants causing toxic water — 10

Yep Mary has hit your article on key!
Hydrofluoric acid mixed with silicon dioxide produces fluorosilicic acid. Simply add water and swallow to keep your teeth cavity free!
Just google the material saftey data sheets on fluorosilicic Acid. Then think again…!

There’s nothing natural about the fluoride that’s added to public water supplies.
Fluoridation is the addition of silicofluoride chemicals, waste products of phosphate fertilizer manufacturing, into public water supplies ostensibly to reduce tooth decay in tap water drinkers. However, the silicofluorides can also deliver trace amounts of lead, arsenic, mercury and other toxins. http://www.nsf.org/business/water_distribution/pdf/NSF_Fact_Sheet.pdf
Silicofluorides have never been tested for safety or efficacy and have been linked to children’s increased absorption of lead from their environment (Masters & Coplan)
Higher blood lead levels are also linked to higher rates of tooth decay. This might be why fluoridated communities are experiencing tooth decay crises See: http://www.FluorideNews.Blogspot.com
I read your blog vey carefully .i think it is very knoledegable information for everyone.
Calcium Fluoride is the naturally accouring element. To bad what they add to water is sodium fluoride which is a toxic waste bi-product from fertilzer, aluminum smelting and uranium enrichmentto name a few. Most commonly used is a compound called FLUOROSILICIC ACID which is a mixture of a bunch of bad stuff chemicals. There is evidence that this toxic substanc called fluoride can strenghten teeth in a topical application but there is not science proving it works systemically when injested. Adding fluoride to the water supply is forced drugging and should be seen as illegal!!! Some excellent rescources for info are fluoridealert.com, fluoridefreeaustin.com
Lastly people who promote fluoridation should realize fluoride is bio-accumiltive meaning it builds up in tissues over time. Since its in the water, its also in our food, sometimes sprayed on foods mixed with pesticides, its in toothpastes, mouth washes etc etc it is impossible to say how much people are really getting. Fluoridation is very irrisponsible and dangerous. Lastly 3 facts on fluoride:
1.) Sodium Fluoirde is so toxic & deadly it is the main ingredient in most rat & mouse poisons
2.) the same Dr used by the scietific community to promote fluoridation to the public & its safety in the 50’s was the same scientist used to promote DDT’s safety (sorry his name is slipping me)
3.) recently the ADA stated there is no safe level of fluoride for infants & mothers should not use fluoridated tap water to make infant formula…why would we put something in tap water dangerous to our babies!!!!!!!
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!
If you’re into conspiracies go back and read the russian and chinese tests on fluoride back in the 30’s and 40’s and see what they say it does to people, then go read from the Nurumberg (sp) trials and see how some Nazi officers were prosecuted for crimes against humanity for adding it to the water in concentration camps as a seditive. Fluoride compounds are a major ingredient in prozac, zoloft, and many other anti-depressant, anti-psychotics and psycotropic drugs……sounds like good stuff to put in the water to me…..keep us all happy with the fact the bankers stole 23.7 trillion from us since last November……. The dental community needs to stop being medical lemmings and do some research of their own. i am not even a Dr or a scientist but I know more about this than most people with PHD’s…..go figure!!!!!!! Let this be a lesson to never trust the medical establishment and to do YOUR OWN research before letting anything enter in your body or the bodies of your beautiful babies!
Some dentists used to advocate cigarettes, too. Most of Europe has rejected flouridation and their teeth are just fine. Paraphrasing Benjamin Stewart in his film ‘Esoteric Agenda’, he points out that multi-national corporations spend large amounts of money to flouridate public water when people already buy their own toothpaste. The big difference of course is that you don’t ingest toothpaste. Cancer, lowered sex drive, birth defects, sedation, brain defects.. does this not sound like a wonder for drug for controlling the populace? Wouldn’t it make more sense to fortify public water with vitamins which are meant to be ingested to promote overall health?
98% of Europe reject water fluoridation, and for good reason. Those that tried it found it to not work and be dangerous. Click the link. See the studies. It leaches lead from water pipes too.
http://www.fluoridealert.org/50-reasons.htm
First, Fluorine is the element, a halogen gas, most electronegative, reactive and one of the most oxidative of all elements, will combine with most all other elements, with calcium being the one that in high dietary levels can form insoluble compounds.
Source of most fluoridation chemicals are the phosphate fertilizer industries of central Florida.
“The Geology of Florida”, 1997, Univ. Press of Florida, page 143 notes: “In addition to uranium, fluorine is an economical byproduct of phosphoric-acid. The fluorine from the rock reacts with silica to form SiF4 gas. During acid production this gas is recovered as fluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6) in wet scrubbers that are part of the environmental-protection equipment. Fluorosilicic acid is widely used in the preparation of chemical compounds and in the treatment of public drinking water.”
See the American Water Works Association Standard for Fluorosilicic Acid B703-06. The foreword gives the same data as above book and page 13 is an entire page of contaminants ranging from heavy metals as arsenic, lead, mercury and more down to “Radionuclides” as uranium, radium 226-228, Alpha and Beta particles.
Two government books on this are: “Health Effects of Ingested Fluoride”, 1993, National Academy of Sciences Report for Congress, and “Toxicological Profile for Fluorides, Hydrogen Fluoride, and Fluorine (F), 1993. US Dept. of Health & Human Services/ATSDR, page 112 (populations unusually susceptable to the toxic effects of fluoride and its compounds), and 125 (Neurotoxicity. Because fluoride interacts with calcium ions needed for effective neurotransmission, fluoride can affect the nervous system.)
My experience in speaking to health departments and over a hundred times speaking to city commissions is the fluoride promoters avoid open debate at all costs.
I am shocked how little of current studies most know and how aggressive they get when defending their beliefs. I have the government studies and peer reviewed data which they just ignore and go into the list of endorsements and talking points.
March 10 2009 at the request of my dentist Mayor the health department held a meeting in secret from the public with the agenda topic of how to rebut my statements. When I discovered what had happened I was told it was not public record. That is a violation of Florida public record law and they ended up giving me a copy of the agenda. From that I asked for power points, all hand outs and also what policy was developed to handle me and who was at the meeting. I got all the records except their actions planned against me and any transcripts , recording and minutes which they said did not exist or who attended.
I had asked for 3 years for a debate in the city of Port Orange Fl and instead a workshop was scheduled with only health department and pro fluoride dentists allowed to speak. I was told by the city managers office it was only for health department and dentists. At the meeting I asked to speak again as did another citizen and was told no and at the end of the meeting the Mayor confirmed no others could speak. They did mention only misguided people were against fluoridation. It was a love fest with the commission and they voted after hearing only one side to keep fluoridation ignoring only one side was heard. A commissioner even stated it was wonderful the dentists would allow fluoridation as it would cost them income when times were tight for business.
Yes I do agree dentists can win debates easily when the other point of view is banned.
I did get to debate Michael Easley DD of Florida Oral Health but had been told by the city no health department people would be at the Daytona Beach meeting. Only 6 were there to my surprise. He has a 12 page position paper on the state web
site which is a sad piece of work.
He was quoted last year in California say to anti fluoridation people. “Nobody drags anyone to a water faucet and makes them drink. Dig a well. Move out of the country.” This man receives taxpayer money to serve the public. With this attitude no one is served well. This is not the worst.
I asked for his dismissal and to verify he was not misquoted. They said his statement was misunderstood.
I discover it is not much better in any fluoridation promoting country. Policy rules and debate is rare.
This is not a dental issue but a uncontrolled dose of never reviewed or approved by FDA contaminate problem. No medication is the history of the world has ever been safe for all and everyone benefits. 1993 US tox profile showed many unusually susceptable risk groups to fluorides but despite a promise during the 2000 Calvert hearings to congress by Charles Fox EPA. He said medical professionals would be warned or the risks listed but this has not happened yet. The risk groups include almost everyone in the US and everyone after age 50. Slight oversight maybe. All I get is blank stares from dentists when given data or aggressive attacks. I would like debate with facts.
Jim Schultz Ormond Beach Fl
So it seems pretty unanimous that we dont want this toxic crap in our water. I filter all my water but that only does so much when the entire municipal water supply is fluoridated. We need to get active in our communities and tell these Eugenicists to keep there toxic waste to themselves. I enocurage everyone to get ective. Start a campaign, fluoride free austin does a good job. They subpina the cites documents find out where they get it, what compounds are actually in it, and how much it costs. I think the cost factor really pisses people off most. Even though it is really a side bar fact in my book whatever it takes to get the people on your side. Get your local documents on who your city purchases thier fluorine compuds from, how much it costs etc like FFA did…show the people they are not only being poisoned but that your municipality is spending millions/yr to treat your water and millions more on the equipment. As for dentists out there STOP BEING LEMMINGS…..we the people need your support and help and remember one thing dental people….you are giving it to your kids too!!!!
We Are Change Colorado did a summer long campaign where we went to water board meetings once a week. What we ended up finding out after we kept getting the run around about who is in charge of the actual fluoridation process we followed the chain of command and that in Colorado the top dog who makes the call regarding fluoridation works the military in Colorado Springs…The military huh? i tell you that says a lot to me!
Costs of fluoridation-Most of the direct costs of fluoridation are hidden and the indirect are never discussed. By far the smallest cost is actual product as 90% of the time H2SiF6 is used which is very cheap as it is just smokestack scrubber liquor from EPA ordered pollution recovery equipment. The price has varied greatly by doubling and often more but the corrosion control chemicals added to decrease destruction of pipes and equipment is much more expensive. They must use orthophosphate , triphosphate or polyphosphate to keep corrosion under control as best they can. Washington DC in 2000 switched to chloramine at the EPA’s request and had the biggest lead contamination problem in the US. They did a cover up for almost three years letting people drink lead toxic water with no notification . Levels were hundreds and even thousands of times over the allowed action level of 15ppb. They tried to blame the entire problem on some lead pipes in one section of the city but it was proven another 100,000 homes had the same levels. It was front page Washington Post 30 days running and free bottled water and filters for 25,000 homes. Their first fix cost 100 million and made it worse as they did it wrong and lied.
They finally added the phosphate and got it under control they claim.
So more staff are needed to collect data and testing and more frequent replacement of corrosion damaged pumps ,sensors, pipes.
The Virginia Tech water corrosion expert Marc Edwards estimated this damage could easily cost homeowners over tens of billions in plumbing repairs and the mildue and plaster, most and all associated repair with plumbing leaking more often because of H2SiF6 and chloramine destruction of pipes.
Ignored are the ugly teeth for life and costly repairs of children exposed to excessive ingested fluorides. The ADA claims only 13% are damaged by fluoridation and the CDC is still claiming only 32%have dental fluorisis in the US and its no big deal. The truth is different. The CDC in a 2003-2004 study showed 48.42% had this damage on multiple teeth but did not publish the study or inform the public as they still claim 32%. The UK York Review in 2000 documented 15% had dental fluorisis before fluoridation and 48% after with 12.5% of the damage ugly enough for cosmetic restoration. I was just reading a study in Smart Money exposing cosmetic repairs have doubled in the last decade being a large income center in many offices. This huge cost of repairs is ignored full well knowing fluoridation causes much if not most of it. This is a conflict of interest of legal proportions for the future. Colgate toothpaste in England did pay a claim to a child damaged from toothpaste ingestion which the ADA claims is the real cause of most of the ugly damage as parents do not supervise use well. If double and triple the damage happens in fluoridated cities then logic says fluoridation is the blame. Dentists instead point the finger at parents but not the ADA who blindly promotes and even put huge money and manpower support to force mandatory fluoridation in many states. The CDC spends far more in advertising and manpower to force fluoridation along with the Health departments. But the one thing they never want to do is debate. Cream rises to the top and crap sinks to the bottom.
Never factored in are the many whole body toxic effects caused or worsened by uncontrolled doses of chronic toxicity building in bones and body for a life time. The NRC 2006 study found over a dozen diseases at risk with levels within the range many receive just from fluoridated water. Everyone receives fluorides from many other sources even if you try to avoid then as many products are contaminated and most eat out where city water is used as in processed foods and beverages.
Just hip fractures alone rising is a huge cost in money and death and disability. Most of the studies show fluoridation over decades hip fractures by as much as double. Some do not but many of the studies were with only 6 years exposure in the 1996 NRC REVIEW. the 7 studies with 20 years exposure all showed increases but the 3 with 6 years showed none.
Thyroid function can be reduced with as little as .7mg a day if the person is low iodine. It is almost impossible to get less then .7mg even in a non fluoridated city. Most get 3mg and more and sometimes much more daily.

I am from the uk and have been readin up on this flouride in water. I have read at numerous places that it is a by product of aluminium production. But we are constantly told that it occurs ‘naturally’ in our water.
I rang up my local water supplier today and asked how much flouride is in our water, I was told less than 1 to every 1 million parts of water, of flouride was present.
I said that people in my home are against our water having flouride, but They guy tried telling me it occurs ‘naturally’ and their is such a small amount (now that is probably a lie). And also if their is a small amount, it still Doesnt make it OK to have flouride in the water, as people drink alot of water and EVERYDAY of drinking it their must be a build up of flouride in our systems which cantt be good at all.
I Also suffer from flourosis, which makes my teeth look messed up, im guessin the flouride levels were much higher in the 1990’s when I was a kid, an before my adult teeth grew all the flouride from the water or powder milk/water i drank messed my teeth up. Their gonna be lyk this for life.
Would I be able to sue the local water supply for this?
To comment 17. Litigation is most likely in the future but until it happens who knows. Some of the law firms are currently seeking people damaged but things like osteosarcoma cancer will be the really big lawsuit payouts with lost legs or death of kids.Colgate did in the UK make a payout years ago for a damaged kid of something like 1000 Pounds as I recall. many others tried to also get in on the money as so many are damaged but it is hard to prove source of the fluoride and they all point fingers. Kidney damage and thyroid problems along with senior hip fractures lawsuits all seem possible soon. Late night on the TV lots of asbestos lawsuit ads and I know my dad worked around it at a power plant and got 4 small settlements but his buddy died of lung cancer being a smoker and his family got 1 million many years ago. Go figure. Dental fluorosis only happens up to age 9 but there is a delay in eruption of several years as it happens as tooth forms hidden in gums. The front 4 teeth are damaged between 16 months and up to 36 depending upon many variables but again they do not pop out for another 3 years or so. The damage is life long as it is hypominerized. Defective porous brittle and easily discolored. Most dentists do not like to talk about it and many play dumb to avoid the conflict or finger pointing . Some will deny what it is. I have even been told it is because the child did not get enough fluoride. I talk to many parents about their experiences.
Why should we have anything “added” to water? In whose best interest is it really to have flouride added water? The question to ask is who benefits from start to finish – financially?
Water fluoridation has a huge impact on the incident of cavities. Majority of my older patients have a mouthful of filling as they did not have fluoride in the water when they grew up. As for my younger patients, I see much fewer cavities.
Richmond Hill Dentist, you only look at the surface.
Not only was dental health not a big deal to older generations, things like toothbrushes and tooth-paste were not as widely available as they are today.
Also, younger people have been FAR more informed about dental health – it has nothing to do with fluoride.
Flouride is a poison – why do you think that out of the 21 comments here, the only person here that supports it is a dentist.. brainwashed by his schools.
Pitiful.
Get the fluoride out of my water now!!
