When you need to find a dentist that is right for you and your family, looking up a name in the phonebook isn't always the best idea. Choosing a dentist that is right for you and your family is an important decision that may take a bit of time and research on your part. Knowing what factors to consider when searching for the ideal dental office is often confusing and overwhelming, ultimately ending with you merely choosing a name out of the phone book. Use this list to help take out the guesswork and guide you on your search for the perfect dentist.

Location

The location of your dentist may affect more than just the time it takes to get there. Locations that are easily accessible such as one situated in a shopping center may have higher fees because of the convenience. An office located in a small town that may require a commute, often times charges lower fees than its big city counterpart.

Hours of Operation

Dental offices are stepping away from the traditional 9 to 5 and are now offering extended hours. Weekend and holiday appointment options may accommodate your busy schedule. Ask if the office has an emergency contact phone number for after-hour emergency treatment.

Services Offered

Search for an office that offers multiple patient services, such as sedation dentistry, in-office whitening, children’s dentistry or orthodontics. Try to locate an office that combines other healthcare services, such as chiropractic care, massage therapy or medical services, in the same location.

Atmosphere

A calm, inviting atmosphere may help ease the stress and nervousness associated with dentistry. Will privacy be an issue for you if the dental chairs are situated close together? Do you feel a sense of cleanliness associated with a sterile environment? Does the equipment appear to be in good shape and well cared for?

Infection Control Procedures

Ask the clinical staff what infection control procedures are followed. Typically, offices follow the universal standards set by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Innovation

Continuing education courses and seminars are used by dentists and dental staff to continue the learning process associated with the ever-changing world of dentistry, plus they are requirements for obtaining and renewing practicing licenses for clinical staff including the dentist.

Ask the dentist if continuing education is valued in the practice beyond the minimum required hours needed for relicensing.

Offices that utilize educational seminars, trade shows, and dental conferences as a way to educate the dental team on new dental technology are not only committed to having knowledgeable staff, a dentist that keeps up with the latest in dental technology may provide you with the best treatment options possible for your situation.

Office Policy and Procedures

Talk with the dental administrator about their office policies and procedures. Do they charge a fee for missed appointments or are appointments canceled without notice? Do they bill your insurance company directly or is that your responsibility? Look for offices that offer payment plans or financing. You may require a procedure that is not covered under your dental plan, or if you do not have insurance, a payment plan may help ease the strain when paying for treatment.

Staff

A staff of courteous, compassionate and friendly people will make your time spent at the dental office not only enjoyable, but may also help alleviate nervousness and stress when facing a dental procedure, such as a root canal.

Fees

When you have narrowed down your search, consider the fees last. Although dental fees are expensive, the above factors may outweigh the cost of dentistry.
