Malocclusion is a discrepancy in the way the upper jaw and lower jaw meet, or more simply, how they bite together.
Factors that contribute to malocclusion include crowded, misaligned, missing, and extra teeth. Malocclusion also occurs when the upper or lower jaw grows in the incorrect position.
Malocclusion is corrected with orthodontic treatment, orthognathic (jaw) surgery, or a combination of both. Failing to correct malocclusion may lead to problems with the temporomandibular joint, affect the gum tissue, and/or cause pain or discomfort in the teeth.
