Definition:

Meth Mouth refers to the destruction of the teeth and gums that is commonly found in the mouths of methamphetamine abusers.

Meth Mouth occurs because:

  • Smoking methamphetamine causes a condition known as xerostomia. Xerostomia is a major contributor of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Poor oral hygiene is also common for methamphetamine users. Theory suggests that due to the affects of the methamphetamine on the users everyday life, brushing and flossing is often neglected or is forgotten altogether.
  • Methamphetamine use has been known to cause bruxism, which is basically the grinding and clenching of the teeth. Bruxism can cause the enamel to fracture, which exposes the dentin layer and -- in some cases -- the pulp of the tooth. Badly decayed teeth are especially affected by bruxism.
