Definition: Bacterial endocarditis is an infection in the lining of the heart or heart valves, that could damage or destroy these valves.

According to the American Heart Association, bacterial endocarditis happens when bacteria in the bloodstream, called bacteremia, lodge on heart tissue that has been damaged or on abnormal heart valves.

Only a specific type of bacteria commonly cause endocarditic, and people with normal heart functions are rarely at risk. Since some dental procedures can cause brief bacteremia, the American Heart Association has set guidelines for people at risk to take precautions before visiting the dentist. Since these guidelines change over the years, it is a good idea to talk with your physician to make sure that you are taking the right precautions before receiving dental treatment.
