Definition:

Archwires are curved wire that extends through each bracket slot and into the band in either the upper or lower dental arch. They are made from:

  • Nickel titanium
  • Stainless steel
  • Gold
  • Ceramic coated nickel titanium and stainless steel

Archwires come in different sizes and strengths. They work together with the brackets to move your teeth. Generally the archwire will be changed once a month during your orthodontic appointment. You may not require wire changes at every appointment, especially in the latter stages of treatment.

If you have lost a band, or a bracket has come off, you may continue to have the same wire to allow the teeth to "catch up" to the others.
