How do you tell someone they have bad breath?

This is such a difficult situation because you are essentially pointing out to someone that they have an offensive odor emanating from their mouth. Very awkward!

Do you have a tactful way to let someone know they have bad breath? Has someone told you that you have bad breath? How did you feel breaking the news, or receiving it? Let's pull our notes together to find an easy way to tell our family, friends, and even strangers that have bad breath, and in return learn to accept that bad breath is a common condition and knowing you have it is not the end of the world.

The Minty-Fresh Gum

Just tell that person, "Want a gum?" That way you are not hurting that person's feelings by just showing an act of courtesy and, although it might seem as a subtle hint to suggest that he or she has bad breath, the person will feel much obliged that you offered them the gum in such a nice way.

Heloful advice

Offer someone a piece of sugar free gum, a mint, a drink of white tea, green tea as it has been known to improve bad breath. If unable to do those things, subtly hint by saying, many people have bad breath due to cotton mouth, not flossing, brushing regularly and not brushing their tongue. That will make them subconscious and they will either rectify it or ask if you've got a drink, gum, etc. As far as family, tell them or offer the above. For a stranger, keep your distance from them if they're close enough to smell it. Always avoid garlic and onion. If that's what is on the menu, take floss, toothbrush with you, if not, sugar free gum and mints. Take enough to offer others. Dental assistant for 10 years. Always works.

Would You Like a Mint?

I obsessively carry these around for myself. Sometimes offering one to a person in need is a subtle hint.
