Most Painful Experience Ever

I went to a specialist but though they were able to numb half of my face the tooth that was infected was not able to be numbed. Found that out the hard way during the drilling. That night was SOOO painful I wanted to take some pliers and rip the damn thing out. Apparently if your tooth is acutely inflamed and/or infected it may not numb. They have tried twice so far and given me steroids and antibiotics meanwhile with attempt #3 in 2 days. I pray to God that this time it will numb or I don't know what else they can do.....

John

I've had some awful dental work carried out since I left the armed forces, and root canal is now a result. Research seems to indicate it's better to keep the tooth alive than to kill it. Infection is caused by other causes. Good dentistry and practical care will alleviate the need to kill the tooth and remove it's method of bacterial protection.

6 root canals done

I got 6 root canals done, 3 top, 3 bottom and no pain at all :D I got the injection before it, let it numb a bit then started. I didn't feel a thing during the procedure, he drilled it, filed it, filled it with material and closed it up :) After it, I needed no pain killers at all :D It was relief once the procedure was started, pain went and stayed gone :) I had 14 filings, 6 root canals and 2 teeth removed, a big dental restoration procedure but the dentist doing it was a pro, so nice too :)

ROOT CANAL AFTER 5 YEARS

Had a root canal 5 years ago, not to bad. I have been having pain and swelling on left side of my face . Also a abscess on tooth with root canal. Finally after 5 months of antibiotics my dentist sent me to a surgeon and he removed part of the root from the tooth with the root canal, the root had a crack in it . I guess we will see if it's going to work, IT'S PRETTY SWOLLEN NOW!

Worst Experience Ever!!

I have never had good experiences at the dentist and this was possibly the worst! My tooth was infected and broken - I also have curved roots so he had a really hard time with it. The first visit I had, I was given laughing gas and tons of Novocaine and still felt it! Second visit was an hour and a half - the roots wouldn't numb up he gave me shots right into the root and it still wouldn't numb! The worst pain ever! It seemed to heal about 2 weeks later I went back for the crown. Now the tooth feels funny. I eat and it feels like I'm chewing gum and it's gonna pull the crown off. When I touch the tooth portion which I can still touch under the crown it's very sensitive and makes the tooth throb! ugh I'm going back in 2 weeks to have it checked - if it needs another root canal I'm just gonna pull it.

More than just a Root Canal

I had a root canal done last week and all was going great, they don't hurt in the least bit...As my dentist was removed the nerves with a small needle called a file it broke off in my gums, my dentist stopped immediately and took another x-ray to see where it was and once she realized how far in my gums it was she stopped right away and said I would have to go and see a specialist. My dentist said it couldn't stay there because there could be infection and so on and on.. Well she sent the x-ray to the specialist and he said it was okay for this metal file to stay in my gums and now she believes it as well. My family doctor said that I would never be able to get a MRI done if this was not removed and my dentist says this is not true...I'm one frustrated patient right about now.. I had to go back to get the tooth filed down some because I'm still in pain and I don't go back for another 2 weeks to finish this tooth... I will have to seek another opinion..Stressed out

not too bad

I had a root canal done yesterday, and despite the stereotypical response of pain it didn't hurt that much. I got laughing gas ALONG with freezing, so i was on cloud 9. I'm only 17 & this was my second root canal in 3 years. The procedure didn't hurt whatsoever, but the after effects are killing me. It was on my front bottom tooth and it seems quite sensitive, and I am unable to eat :(

A-Okay

I was petrified about the root canal but it was no more difficult than a filling. They use the high speed drill for a moment to get through then a quieter low speed drill to clean out the pulp. Listened to a CD. Didn't take long, a slight pain when they got in as one nerve was still alive but she numbed it right away. No post operative pain. Cake walk. Did go to an endodontists which I think is a good idea.

Procedure of root canal not that bad

I had a recent root canal. I was so scared I was prescribed diazepham to take 2 hours before. I did not feel any pain in fact found it quite relaxing, mind you I made him give me loads of injections so I was well numb.

Root canal relieves pain

Contrary to what most people think, most root canal are often completely painless. In fact they actually relieve pain from a tooth that has a toothache.

bad practitioner

I had a root canal done and now almost a month later it is very infected and the pain is unbearable. I'm going to find a good dentist to morrow cuz this shouldn't have happened. I think the infection has leaked into the bone.

went to class right after root canal

LOL, it was a weird and amazing experience. The anesthesia was still in effect after the root canal, I can still feel drilling in my molar when I got out of the clinic. But there was no pain, it just felt so numb and cold to the cheeks. My advice is if someone's teeth is aching right now, they should go get an appointment and get over their fear of dentists.
—Guest hi everyone!

Unforgetable experience

I went to the dentist to start a root canal and he gave me 14 shots of anesthesia and never did my gum got insensible. I went to see another dentist and with just one shot even my nose went to sleep. I had my root canal and felt ok. but I will always feel very bad about that dentist with the 14 shots I believe he did not know what he was doing. Hope other people do not have this kind of terrible experience. Each time I go by a dental office I feel all the pain again. Thank you.
—Guest 14 shots ans still pain

root canal

I had a root canal that I am still paying for... Now I have pain on my tooth again. The dentist wants to do another root canal on the same tooth, and its $875. I started to cry. I would think it was his fault that the first did not take??

Uncomfortable But Not Painful

I had a root canal yesterday. I experienced no pain, and I have little pain today, although my endodontist did give me pain medication to take, and I've been taking it dutifully. The worst part, for me, was the emotions and anxiety I felt beforehand. I take very good care of my teeth and was shocked when the dentist told me I needed a root canal. He said it was a deep childhood filling that had started to crack and degenerate the nerves. It was tooth sensitivity that brought me in. After I found out I needed a root canal, I felt upset and highly annoyed, as it's expensive and time consuming and I had tried so hard to avoid that. My endodontist was empathetic to this. He explained everything as he went along, which also made it easier. The part I disliked the most was the plastic sheet they put in and around your mouth -- it felt suffocating and it was hard to swallow. The drill would sometimes shake the back of my skull, which felt like a shock, and that freaked me out.
